Africa has always been the Mecca for documentary photography expeditions. From time to time images of undernourished children and fratricidal wars are published in newspapers, magazines and journals throughout the world. Images of hope, solidarity and the fight to rebuild lives are scarce. To photograph the suffering of a child, covered with flies, dying in her mother's arms only requires the presence of a photographer in an area of conflict during the dry season.
It seems to us that the greatest challenge lies in looking for exactly what cannot be so readily perceived -- to seek the means to penetrate the soul of these long-suffering people and rescue values, feelings and faith that were not destroyed by greed, war and despair.
In September and October 2002, with the support of the International Committe of the Red Cross, local churchies and missions we visited hospitals, clinics, refugee camps, minefield clereance, schools, etc both in urban and rual areas. The result is 50 of high-impact photographic images, both in Black and White and Colours, from Luanda, Huambo and Uige, as well as other places.
